Installing PHPBB on Windows

Why use PHPBB?

We have such a lot of forum solution such as V-Bulletin and etc. PHPBB is one the forum solution which is free to use and license by GNU General Public License (GPL). It’s easy to use and to manage the administration forum and etc. Here are the steps to install PHPBB2 on Windows platform.

In order to complete the installation, user has to complete fill up the detail requested below. Please take note that the database you install into should already exist. If you are installing a database that uses ODBC, e.g MS Access you should first create a DNS for it before proceeding.

If you use MySQL5.0 database, you should have to create a database first on MySQL. How to create a database?

You have to make sure the MySQL5.0 already installed in your computer before proceeding to create database.

Step 1

Click on the start menu, and select Run. Type CMD to get the command prompt.

To create database, type the command as below pic:

Enter the password for the root database as below pic:

After you already create a database name, you can check your database is exist or not. By type the command as below pic, please enter you password.

Once you already into the MySQL monitor, enter the command as below pic. You suppose can see your database name after you enter the command. Type exit to logout from MySQL monitor.

Step 2

Before you start installing PHPBB2, you have to make sure the installation directory already the C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs

On my situation, I try to install on localhost. If you have you own domain you can ftp the installation file to a root directory.

By typing http://localhost/phpBB2/install/install.php, you will see the first page of PHPBB welcome installation as pic below. Please fill up the detail requested below. On the database type, choose MySQL 4.x/5.x. Put the database name and password that you create on step 1. Click Start Install after fill up the detail.

Step 3

Your admin username has been created. At this point your basic installation is complete. You will now be taken to a screen which will allow you to administer you new installation. Please be sure to check the General Configuration details and make any required changes. Click Finish Installation to proceed.

Step 4

This is a information page after you finish installation. Please ensure both the install/ and contrib/ directories are
deleted. Click to the yourdomain.com Forum Index to get the main page forum.

Step 5

This is your PHPBB forum looks like. On the main page or index, you can try to login using your admin username and password. Click Log In to enter the forum. CONGRATULATION!!!! You successfully install PHPBB on your PC.
